The Centre for Canadian Studies
(University of Strasbourg)
The Centre for Canadian Studies of Strasbourg University, based in the English department, was founded by Simone Vauthier in 1983. Under her direction it rapidly became an important part of the network of Canadian studies in France; over the years many scholars and writers from Canada and elsewhere have attended conferences and seminars and given talks under the auspices of the Centre.
The vocation of the Canadian Studies Centre has not changed since its inception,
that is, to promote Canadian culture (in the broadest sense of the word) in
several ways: through courses focusing on Canada within the university
curriculum, through encouraging student exchanges and Master's and Doctoral
research on Canadian topics, through organizing and developing scientific events
and exchanges. A number of study grants have, over the years, enabled students
to spend several weeks or a year studying or carrying out research within the
Canadian university system.
At the present time members of the centre dispense classes on Canadian
literature and history at 3rd year and Master's level, and the centre counts
among its members staff and doctoral students of Strasbourg University working
in the areas of cultural studies, history, literature and education. It also has
members in other institutes specializing in literature and musicology. The
Centre continues to promote scientific collaboration through conferences and the
inviting of prominent Canadian academic figures and writers to Strasbourg.
